She was like the daughter of James Franklin Devendorf and Lillie A. Potter who married in Santa Clara County on Feb. 19, 1879. They later moved to Alameda County. James Franklin Devendorf was a philanthropist who founded the artists colony in Carmel-by-the-Sea.

On April 16, 1881, the San Jose newspapers reported that J. Frank Devendorf and/or Mrs. J. L. Devendorf (the reports varied) had petitioned the Common Council to move the remains of Grace L. Devendorf from Section C, Block 8, Lot 4 of Oak Hill Cemetery to Section I, Block 81, Lot 1 [the current location]. (San Jose Mercury, San Jose Daily Morning Times.) [Section C, Block 8, Lots 3-4 is the Aram family plot; J. F. Devendorf's mother was married to Joseph Aram.]
