7th Viscount Lifford; Lt.-Colonel, DSO, Dorsetshire Regiment, British Army.

He was educated at the Bilton Grange School, Warwickshire, and Haileybury College, Hertfordshire. On 9 December 1901, he was commissioned as 2nd lieutenant in the 6th Battallion/Worcestershire Regiment (formerly Worcester Militia), which saw service in the Boer War. He was awarded the Queen's South Africa medal with clasps for South Africa and for Cape Colony.

On 26 January 1903, he was commissioned a 2nd lieutenant, Dorset Regiment, subsequently promoted to lieutenant in 1906, and to captain in 1910. He served in WWI, earning the DSO in 1916, and a bar to the DSO in 1918.

At Beverley Minster, East Riding of Yorkshire, on 8 July 1919, James married Charlotte Rankine Maule (1883-1954; daughter of Sir Robert Maule; widow of Captain Edgar Walker). In 1925, he succeeded his father as Viscount Lifford. Just three days after his wife's death from pulmonary tuberculosis, he died from a coronary thrombosis at his home in Scotland.

Lord and Lady Lifford had no children together; upon his death, the title passed to a cousin, Alan William Wingfield Hewitt.
