Arthur mustered into Civil War service as Captain of Company C, 118th Illinois Volunteer Infantry, on November 7, 1862 at Camp Butler, Illinois. He was killed in action on November 11, 1863, in a Battle near Vermilionville, Louisiana. His brother, Major Benjamin F Marsh, helped in the recovery of the body, which had been buried on the field by and old slave. Major Marsh took the body to new Orleans, where it was prepared and placed in a metal casket. He then took it by wagon back to Warsaw for burial.

It should be noted that it is confirmed (via the decedent's gr-gr grandson) that Mr. Marsh fathered a son but no proof exists that he and the child's mother were ever married or that he even knew before his death that he had fathered a child. The mother also had a daughter before she left Germany, who in all likelihood was conceived out of wedlock.
