Captain of an Independent Company of Scouts for the Union Army during the Civil War. He was elected Superintendent of free schools in Monroe County, the first person to be elected to this office in West Virginia. He was admitted to the WV bar in 1865. He served one term as Sheriff of Monroe County 1865-1867, and two terms in the WV State Legislature 1869-1871. He married Elizabeth White Chapman in 1866 and they had 7 children.

His grave is not in the fenced part of the cemetery. Looking at the front door of the church, his grave is to the far left corner of the property. A military marker was placed on it. His wife's grave is next to him, unmarked.
