Separate accidents claimed the lives of two people in Cherokee County over the weekend.

Cherokee County Coroner Joe Vinesett pronounced Alan Duane Antisdel, 41, of Blacksburg, dead at the scene of a motorcycle accident at 6 p.m. Saturday.

Lance Cpl. Bryan McDougald of the S.C. Highway Patrol said Antisdel was traveling east on Burnt Mill Road on a 1985 Honda motorcycle when he lost control and traveled off the right side of the road. The motorcycle struck an embankment and threw Antisdel into a tree.

Antisdel, who was not wearing a helmet, was traveling 35 mph in a 25 mph zone, the trooper said.

A nearby resident said Antisdel's wife was traveling about 100 yards behind him on a second motorcycle when the accident occurred about five miles east of Blacksburg.

Mary Kirkley, who is studying to be a First Responder, was among the first people on the accident scene. She said she knew she didn't have the training to treat the accident victim. Her father, Ed Kirkley, an Antioch Volunteer Fire Department firefighter, did have the training, but she said there wasn't much emergency responders could do for Antisdel.

"I called my dad and he arrived within minutes," she said. "I just kept saying, 'You've got to try to do something; his wife is standing right there.'"

She said many drivers on Burnt Mill Road don't obey the speed limit signs.

A second fatal accident claimed the life of a York man at 3:20 a.m. Sunday.

Cherokee County Deputy Coroner Glenn Fuller pronounced Mario Alberto Mateo, 24, dead at the scene of a single vehicle accident at Mile Marker 91 on Interstate 85.

Mateo and the other occupants of the northbound vehicle were ejected when it traveled out of control and rolled several times, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol. At least one other person was taken to the hospital.
