Telephone, Texas — Alta Corene Starnes Thornton, 94, passed away on October 27, 2022 at her home in Telephone, Texas.
Alta was born in 1927 in Grosvenor, Texas. The oldest of four, she met her husband, Bill, when she was 16, while chasing her dog under his front porch. Alta and Bill married in 1946 and spent 76 years together. Alta graduated from Howard Payne University in 1949.
Over the course of her life, Alta was a teacher of kindergarten and first grade, pastor's wife, Sunday School teacher, special education aide, retirement home manager, and a vital community member. She was involved with numerous Christian and missionary organizations, including WMU, resident life director at Buckners Children's Home, California Parks Ministry, and Texas Mission Service Corps. With every role, she brought warmth, laughter, generosity, hospitality, and a deep care for others.
Alta was a loving mother to Linda, Jan, David, Pam, and foster daughter Rita. Together with Bill, they had 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Until the end of her life, Alta was committed to the well-being of women and children and made a home for those who had none.
Alta would have celebrated her 95th birthday on November 28.
A celebration of Alta's life will be held on Saturday, November 19, 2022, at 1:30 p.m. at the Telephone Baptist Church, 14732 E FM 273, Telephone, TX 75488. A graveside service will follow at the Forest Grove Cemetery.
