Funeral service for Chesley Orville James, 84, Fletcher, will be held 2:00 p.m., Thursday, December 26, 2019 at the Fletcher First Baptist Church, with Great Nephew, Logan Prince, LifeChurch, Yukon, officiating. Burial will follow at the Fletcher Cemetery under the direction of the Fletcher Funeral Home. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mr. James passed away on Saturday, December 21, 2019 in Lawton, Oklahoma at the age of 84.

Chesley was born May 11, 1935 in Lawton, Oklahoma to Samuel Homer and Maudie Belle (Fraley) James. He grew up in the Fletcher area attending school at Rocky Ford School. After quitting school, he joined the US Air Force. While in the Air Force, he finished his education and earned his GED. He then enrolled and completed several special training schools. He left the Air Force as a Master Mechanic, performing major and minor overhauls on single, twin, and multi engine aircraft. After the Air Force, he worked for North American Rockwell Corporation and was the crew leader for Saturn S-II stage handling team. Later working for NASA, Ches was the crew leader for the jet engine section on Apollo 11. He was also instrumental in the development of the US Navy SES-100B, surface effect ship. Chesley worked in many foreign countries after a career with Rockwell and Bell. He built electrical power generating plants in Africa. His last job before retirement, was training the natives to maintain the power generating engines. After retirement, Chesley made his home in Panama City, FL with his wife, Shirley (Bozeman) James. He returned to Oklahoma in 2009 and resided until his death.

Chesley is survived by a niece and caretaker, Brenda (James) Prince and her husband Ricky, of Fletcher; 1 sister, Della Lou Coffman, of Weatherford, TX; 1 grandson, Timmy Beck and his wife Vanessa, of Mobile, AL; 2 great grandchildren: Chace and Madison Beck, of Mobile, AL; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins, including Milvadean and Doyle “His Yardman” Smith, of Fletcher.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Samuel and Maudie Belle James; his wife, Shirley James; his daughter, LaDawn Jame; 2 brothers: Othel “Kilroy” James and Clyde James; and 3 sisters: Melba Ryans, Pauline Williams, and Shelba Jean McAdoo.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Linda Lou James Memorial Scholarship Fund at the First National Bank of Fletcher.
