Actress. One of the most prominent Nouvelle Vague performers, she was best known for her work with director Jean Luc Godard. Born Hanne Karin Blarke Bayer in Solbjerg, Denmark, she arrived to Paris in 1958 and began working as a model, being Coco Chanel who gave her her professional name. In 1960 she knew Godard, who at first offered her a part in 'Breathless', but she refused it because she had to appear nude. However, she appeared in eight other movies directed by him: 'A Woman Is a Woman' (1961), 'My Life to Live' (1962), 'The Little Soldier' (1963, shot in 1960 but unreleased for three years due to censorship), 'Band of Outsiders' (1964), 'Pierrot le fou' (1965), 'Alphaville' (1965), 'Made in USA' (1966) and 'The Oldest Profession' (1966). They married in 1961, but divorced in 1967. Outside Godard, she also appeared in movies such as 'The Nun' (1966) by Jacques Rivette, 'The Stranger' (1967) by Luchino Visconti and 'Justine' (1969) by George Cukor, to name a few. She continued to work steadily in the 1970s, and made her directorial debut with 'Vivre ensemble' (1973), in which she also acted. She continued to appear on screen in the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s, but her movies became fewer; also an accomplished singer, she began concentrating in this area. She also wrote four novels and three films. She died in Paris at age 79 due to postoperative complications.
