Algernon Finlay James, was born in in Ponteland in Northumberland in 1881 the son of Walter James and his wife Annie Augusta (nee Mitford). His father was the owner of a lead manufacturing business.
Algernon was baptised in Ponteland on the 16th of August 1881.Their family home was at Elvaston Hall in Ryton. His father died in November 1883 aged 38. His mother re-married on the 4th of October 1893. Her second husband was Sir Alexander Campbell the 6th Duke of Aberuchill in Perth. His mother was then known as Lady Campbell
Algernon was a rubber planter with land in Columbo. He married Charlotte Beatrice Foster in Cottingham in Yorkshire on the 28th of November 1911. They had one daughter born in 1913.
During WW1 he served as a Lieutenant in the Prince of Wales’s Own Regiment. He was awarded a Silver Badge (a sign he was injured).
In 1925 they returned to England from – they lived from 1928 at Pine Cottage in Ripley but moved to Kings Ride in Camberley in 1928.
In 1931 they were living at White Walls in Portsmouth Road in Frimley. Algernon did here on the 16th of March 1932 and was buried at Frimley on the 19th of March 1932.
