US Senator. The daughter of a Fargo paving contractor, she was the first woman from North Dakota to serve in Congress. After graduating from Northwestern University, she worked as a radio announcer. She married Congressman Quentin Burdick in 1960, two years after each was widowed; he had been elected to the United States Senate nine days earlier. During his Senate service, she was a member of an American delegation to the Soviet Union in 1978, and was active in Democratic politics. Upon his death in 1992, Jocelyn was appointed to fill the vacancy, serving for three months until a special election could be held. During her brief time in office, she supported women's equality causes.
