Obituary:
Ephraim Otto was born in Preston County, West Virginia, August 22, 1840. At the age of twenty he left his parental home to go to Missouri. There he made his home with his brother, Sol, six miles west of Kirksville, until the Civil War broke out.
He was among the first volunteers and fought his first battle August 1, 1861, at Kirksville, Mo. He served all through the entire war. He spent nine months in prison at Austin, Texas and Tyler, Texas and has ever been loyal to his country.
He was united in marriage to Frances D. Matlick, August 27, 1867. Two children were born to this union; Lester Scott Otto of Filer, Idaho and Mrs. (Mary Alice) G.G. Richards of Haviland, Kansas, at whose home he has spent the last nineteen months of his life. He was a teacher of no mean ability in his younger days.
He was converted about thirty-five years of age and has been a loyal soldier of the cross and in his last months, spent much time in prayer and communion with his Master. He entered into his eternal rest early in the morning of February 25, 1922, at the age of 81 years, 6 months and 2 days. Although a helpless invalid and a great care, he will be greatly missed by those who cared for him. He was always patient and cheerful up to the last few months, when his suffering became almost unbearable.
He was the last of his family, eleven brothers and three sisters having preceded him to the better world. His companion of more than fifty years was called home three years ago last October. Twenty months of that time was spent with his son in Idaho. It was his request that no flowers should grace his casket, but that the Stars and Stripes should cover his remains.
He leaves to morn his loss one son and one daughter with their families thirteen grand children and ten great grand children. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. I R Failes at the Methodist Church Sunday afternoon, February 26 at one thirty and he was given a military burial in the Haviland Cemetery by the members of Cyrus T. Gause Post American Legion.
