Richard was killed in the train accident on the express train from Perth to Geraldton. At 1:45 pm in the morning, the train plunged into a hole caused by severe rain erosion of the track line. The passenger carriage was damaged and caused injury to 13 people. Richard was severely injured, knowing he was dying, he refused first aid, requesting his carers to help the others that could be saved. He died with the hour.
