On Friday June 17, 1921, the San Jose Evening News reported that Earl R. Leib, son of San Jose Judge S. R. Leib, a geologist employed by the Southern Pacific Company, was asphyxiated after going down a coal shaft in Ione on Wednesday afternoon. When Mr. Leib entered the coal shaft, he was not wearing a gas mask and it was not realized that there was a dangerous accumulation of gas. His body had to be retrieved with grappling hooks as no one could enter safely. Mr. Leib was 34 years of age, graduated from Stanford in 1911, and married Miss Grace Burke of Los Angeles on Dec. 22, 1912[?]. His brother Roy C. Leib left for the scene of the accident. On June 19, the San Jose Mercury reported that Earl Russell Leib had been buried at Oak Hill.

Earl Leib's father Samuel Franklin Leib was one of the leading attorneys in San Jose. Judge Leib died on Dec. 26, 1924. The Recorder (San Francisco's legal newspaper) reported that Judge Samuel F. Leib was survived by his wife, Lida Campbell Leib, and they had three sons and two daughters: Mrs. Lida C. Armstrong of Omaha, Mrs. Elma Wright of San Jose, Frank A. and Roy C. Leib of San Jose, and [the late] Earl Leib of Los Angeles.
