Alice was born near Millville, Butler County, Ohio on her families farm, passed down by her grandfather Jacob Rumple, who came to Butler County in 1810 from North Carolina. Her father was a well liked farmer and later a traveling salesman who was active in the community. Alice married William Edward Gardner in 1888, and soon after, they removed to Washington DC where Mr Gardner had a living as a government clerk. Her sister Helen lived and worked nearby. The couple visited Butler County quite frequently to see family and friends, and after William Gardner's death in 1929, Alice and Helen moved back to Hamilton to spend their remaining years amongst friends.

*note: Alice's middle name "Nixon" was her grandmothers Maiden name.
