Nellie Virginia (Crabtree) Parham, age 95, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 10, 2020, at her home surrounded by her loving family who were like her children and under the watchful care of her friend and nurse, Wanda Eastes. She was born July 10, 1924, in Winchester, TN, to Rufus Quincy Crabtree and Ava Anna (Cooper) Crabtree. In school she became valedictorian in the 8th grade and completed the 9th grade before she withdrew from school to help her mother with her 10 siblings, seen by them as their surrogate mother. At one time she worked as a manager-co-owner at Proby’s Grocery Store, and ran a farm on which she also raised quarter horses. Nellie displayed an incredible business sense and a knack for solving problems. Nellie truly lived life to the fullest through simple pleasures; attending barrel races with her daughter (of the heart), cooking for and spending time with her family, friends, nephews and nieces. She always told it “like it was” and was like a walking Farmer’s Almanac with an uncanny ability to reach people in a deep and positive way. She was preceded in death by her father, mother, brothers – Vernon Crabtree, Buford F. Crabtree, Herman Crabtree, Donald Boise Crabtree, and Wilbur Cooper Crabtree; sisters – Stella (Crabtree) Holt, Myra (Crabtree) Dunagan, Christeen (Crabtree) Davis, Helen (Crabtree) Carlton, and Edna Louise (Tipps) Crabtree, and granddaughter (of the heart) Madison Ostertag. Nellie was survived by her daughter (of the heart) Iva Michelle Russell, granddaughter (of the heart) Taylor Ostertag; a brother, Jack Henderson (Darlene) Crabtree; and many nieces, nephews, and grand-nieces and grand-nephews. Family, friends, and others whose lives Nellie touched are invited to the Moore-Cortner Funeral Home, 300 1st Ave NW, Winchester, TN, for visitation from 10:00 a.m. to 12 p.m. with service at 12:00 p.m. with graveside following at Franklin Memorial Gardens on Sunday, January 12, 2020, to reminisce, grieve, support each other and, of course, just chat. A debt of gratitude for the incredible support from Avalon Hospice and especially the support and love from her nurse and friend Wanda Eastes. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital – www.stjude.org. Moore-Cortner Funeral Home, (931)-967-2222, www.moorecortner.com.
