New Bern - Ethel Gray Avery Dunn, 85, died Sunday, January 5, 2020 at Gardens of New Bern.

She was born May 28, 1934 in New Bern, daughter of the late Lonnie James Avery and Nannie Gay Purifoy Avery.

She was a member of Spring Hope Free Will Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School. She worked for a number of years at Little Hands Day Care and loved children and spending time with her family.

Mrs. Dunn is survived by her children, Ellen D. Purifoy of New Bern, John Dunn and wife Sharon of Ft. Worth, TX and James W. Dunn and wife Darlene of New Bern; her sister, Mary Lou Well of Nashville, TN and her grandchildren, John Franco Dunn, Sheila Jennifer Dunn, Lawrence James Dunn, Nicholas George Dunn, Kristin Purifoy, John Daniel Purifoy, Ashley Marie Dunn and Matthew M. Harvey; and three great-grandchildren, Avery Twiss, Emelia Hope Dunn and Stella Harvey.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by two granddaughters, Jaime Lee Purifoy and Susan Purifoy McNeely.

The family will receive friends at Pollock-Best Funeral Home 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Monday, January 6. A graveside service will be held 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 7 at Pinetree Cemetery in the Cayton community.
