Brother Abner was a preacher in the goldfields of Katanning and officiated at the funeral and burial service for Miss Annabel Ranford, whose tragic death on January 23 1899, was due to her skirts catching fire in the kitchen.

The Rev. J. A. Howes, of Katanning, preached his farewell sermon to his Kojonup parishioners in the Agricultural Hall on Sunday. He took for his text the appropriate words, "Give an account of thy Stewardship." In the course of his interesting address the reverend gentleman briefly reviewed his work in this district during the past five years, and spoke in warm terms of the excellent support he had always received here and the good feeling that had always been shown him not only by the members of his own flock, but in fact by every section of the community.
There passed away on Tuesday November 27th at Maylands one who for five years from 1906-1911 was a familiar, figure along the Midland line. The Rev James A. Howes was Rector of Gingin and had as his parish the territory between Watheroo on the north and Muchea on the south and as far east or west as he could reach.
In 1909 the parish was divided into two, viz., Moora and Gingin. He is still gratefully remembered by many old Greenough residents to whom he ministered from 1904 to 1906. He was a humble minded Christian and a faithful parish priest. He took the first Church service in Kahowna in 1896.

Oh, soldier of Christ, thy work well done,
Sweet peace be thine, thy crown well won.
