The funeral service for Sebastian B. Schumacher, 69, Linton was held April 30 at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Linton, with Reverends Bill Miller of Linton and Joseph Mentel of Napoleon officiating. Schumacher died April 27 at the Linton Hospital.
Burial was at St. Andrew's Catholic Cemetery in Zeeland under the direction of Weigel-Myers Funeral Home, Linton. Casketbearers were six nephews; Richard, Kenny, Jim and Leo Schumacher, Leon Wald and Joe Wolf. Military honors were conducted by the Linton and Zeeland American Legion posts.
Schumacher was born on a farm near Venturia on March 28, 1917, to Bernard and Elizabeth (Klein) Schumacher. He grew up on the family farm and attended a rural school in that area. He entered the U.S. Army in January of 1942 and served in the European, African, and Middle Eastern Theaters. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge.
Schumacher was discahrged with a rank of Staff Sargeant in September 1945 and returned to Venturia, where he worked on his father's farm. On November 6, 1946 he married Marry Senger at Zeeland and the couple made their home on a farm northwest of Zeeland. Mrs. Schumacher died in 1974. In 1978 Schumacher retired to Linton and on February 20, 1982 married Tillie Horner at Linton.
Schumacher was a member, past commander (1983) and past vice commander (1982) of the Linton American Legion post, a member of the Strasburg VFW, served on the Zeeland School Board from 1961-1967, was a past member of the Zeeland American Legion post, and served on the Zeeland Farmers Co-op and Elevator boards for many years.
Survivors include his wife Tillie, Linton; four sons, Ronald and Russell, both of Linton, Herman of Herried, and Harry of Zeeland; four daughters, Rosalind Schumacher of Beulah, Mrs. Gale (Brenda) Olsen and Geraldine Schumacher, both of Bismarck, and Mrs. Bob (Ardalia) Praus of Linton; two step-daughters, Mrs. Jerome (Peggy) Bosch of Linton, and Mrs. Jon (Carla) Braaten of Casselton; 12 grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; three brothers, Ben B. of Bismarck, John B. of Venturia, and Joe B. of Linton; and two sisters, Mrs. Magdalena Engelhardt and Mrs. Claude (Katie) Roehrich, both of Zeeland.
He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife (Mary 1974), and infant son (Joseph 1968), three brothers (Paul 1975, Anton 1978, and Mike 1922) and sister (Elizabeth 1966).
