Alden John CUSICK Obituary
Chicago Tribune, Chicago, Illinois
January 9, 1983 (Sunday), Section 3, Page 16

A.J. Cusick, 84, retired advertising executive ~ ALDEN J. CUSICK, a former director of General Outdoor Advertising Co. and a well-known Chicago advertising executive, died Saturday in Highland Park. He was 84. Mr. Cusick had lived in Wilmette many years. He was a native of Green Bay. He joined General Outdoor in 1923 and retired in 1962. His greatest contribution to the industry was the development of a device to turn off all the lights on New Your City's Broadway theater district with a single switch in World War II. Without such a master switch, authorities said at the time, the "The Great White Way" may have been permanently blacked out during the war as a security measure. MR. CUSICK also was a former president of the Chicago Ad Club and was active in Catholic charities. He graduated from the University of Notre Dame law school in 1921 and received the Dome Award as the school's outstanding graduate that year. Mass will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Sts. Faith, Hope & Charity Catholic Church, Winnetka. Contributions may be made to Villa St. Cyril in Highland Park, where Mr. Cusick lived at the time of his death. Survivors include his wife, Ethel; a daughter, Anne Weiss; a son A.J. Jr.; and nine grandchildren.
