Son of Ann Daves and William Biddle Shepard, Lieut., Aide-De-Camp to his first cousin, General James Johnston Pettigrew N.C. Vols, Army of Northern Virginia, C.S.A.. After Pettigrew's death Shepard served as aide-de-camp on the staff of Brig. Gen. James G. Martin, district of North Carolina and was encamped at Wilmington for several months. Shepard then became a member of Selden's artillery battery, which was stationed at Mobile, Alabama. This battery fought in the battles of Atlanta, and Franklin and Nashville, Tennessee. It was then transferred to J.E. Johnston's command in North Carolina, part of Hoke's division. Shepard's primary business was in growing cotton and selling cotton for other farmers. He dealt with commission merchants in Baltimore, Norfolk, VA and others. In addition Shepard founded the Edenton Peanut Company and grew and brokered peanuts, which he marketed through the Norfolk Storage company. He also sold truck crops such as potatoes, peas, wheat, corn, and tobacco to factors in New York City, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Norfolk. In Jul 1878 Shepard helped establish the Albemarle guards unit of the North Carolina Guards and served as a Captain.Shepard was b. Elizabeth City, Pasquotank Co.,NC d. at sea near Kingston, Jamaica, while on a pleasure cruise, md. (1) 26 Jan 1869 Faunsdale, Marengo Co. AL Louisa Collins Harrison daughter of Dr. Thomas Alexander and Louisa McKinley (Collins) Harrison md. (2) 6 Nov 1879 Hillsborough, NC Pauline Carrington Cameron md. (3) 15 Dec 1896 Mildred Coles Cameron William's second and third wives were daughters of Paul Carrington.
