Twenty year-old Hartog was living at the Berg foundation. The Berg foundation was founded in 1909 as a shelter for Jewish children from ailing families and child custody. In 1940 106 boys and girls between the ages of 4 and 21 were housed at the Berg foundation. The non-Jewish director Reitsema tried to protect his pupils and staff as much as possible, and about 70 residents survived the war by going into hiding or declaring a non-Jewish person. On April 7, 1943, the residents of the Berg foundation were arrested and deported. Hartog was murdered in the Holocaust in Middle Europe.
His father & sister were also murdered in the Holocaust. His mother, Mietje van Collem, was divorced from his father in 1933, and died in 1941 in Apeldoornse Bos, a psychiatric institution.
