Asa Akins Found In Ohio Fri., Last Week
Foul play was suspected by Louisville officers and relatives in the death of James Asa Akin, 48, Creel, Ky., whose body was found April 27 in the Ohio River and whose identity was established Friday through clothing and laundry marks. Akin, proprietor of a general store, filling station, and a farm at Creel, in Green County, always carried from $700 to $1,000 on him, according to his brother, Thomas Akin, former of the Louisville Police Department. The Creel merchant deposited seven checks totaling $360 on April 4 at the Citizens Union National Bank, 5th and Jefferson, but did not deposit any cash, his brother ascertained. He was not seen after that date. A police report by Jefferson County Patrolmen Thomas Beauchamp and L. F. Wiser said the "man had received a lick on the head." Their report was made when the body was found April 27 near Brenner Lane and Cane Run Road. The officers also had run a description of the body in their report. The body was buried April 28 in Jefferson County Cemetery in Jeffersontown. Deputy U. S. Marshall Evan Akin said a warrant had been issued by the Alcohol Tax Unit against James Asa Akin, on a liquor transportation charge. An investigator for the unit, who said he knew James Asa Akin personally, also expressed the opinion of foul play in the case. The investigator said the warrant was the outgrowth of the finding of Akins' overturned car in Larue County March 31 with seven gallons of liquor in it. ~The News-Journal, Thursday, June 15, 1944 .Kentucky Death Records Index, rootsweb AKIN, JAMES A; age 48; death place JEFFERSON; death date 27 Apr 1944; Volume 020, Certificate 09836
