Joseph Charles Abernathy, 73, of Tampa died Tuesday at home. He was music minister at First Baptist Church of Tampa for 28 years. For nine years, he served as associate pastor and minister of music emeritus at First Baptist Church of Tampa. He was former vice president of the Florida Baptist Convention and a member of Florida Baptist Singing Men. He was the former director of music for the Tampa Bay Baptist Association and the former president of the Florida Baptist Directors' Association. A native of Spartanburg, S.C., he had lived in the Tampa Bay area 37 years, coming from Lynchburg, Va., where he was minister of music at Rivermont Avenue Baptist Church. The Rev. Abernathy attended Wooford College and graduated with a degree in music from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky. He continued his graduate studies while working as choirmaster of Parkland Baptist Church in Louisville, Ky. He was a U.S. Army veteran. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth W.; one son, Joseph C. Jr. of Broken Arrow, Okla.; one daughter, Lisa White, Tampa; three brothers, Warren H. and George F., both of Spartanburg, S.C., and William G. of Knoxville, Tenn.; and two sisters, Ruby Simms and Mary Witherspoon, both of Spartanburg, S.C.
