Barzillai was the first of seven known children born to John W Ledbetter and Elizabeth Whiteside Ledbetter. He married Sarah Elliot 12 February 1824. They had 12 known children together: Nancy, Elizabeth, Sarah, Michael, John W, Rhoda Emmaline, Samuel Hampton, William Overton, Thomas Benton, Tempa Melinda, Maiah, and Calvin. After Sarah's death in 1856, he married Harriet Amanda Waldrop 5 September 1858.
