Patrick was the son of James Anderson and Bridget Daley who were both born in Ireland. Although he was born in New York, the family later settled in Dubuque, Iowa. There, he met and married Sarah Henneberry on 28 October, 1880. Patrick and Sarah then moved to South Dakota to homestead. His brothers James and John also settled in South Dakota and married two of Sarah's sisters. Patrick and Sarah had one child, a daughter named Sarah and nicknamed "Sadie".
