Sarah was the daughter of John Henneberry and Catherine Carroll. The family immigrated to the U.S. in 1865 and settled in Dubuque, Iowa. While living in Dubuque, she met and married Patrick Anderson on 28 October 1880. Sarah's parents and three of her sisters left Iowa and settled in Charles Mix County, South Dakota in mid 1885. Sarah and Patrick also moved to South Dakota and settled in Lawrence County where their daughter, Sarah was born. Two of Sarah's sisters who came to S. D., Anna and Anastasia (Stasia) later married two of Patrick's brothers.
