Obituary

Darlene Scarborough Abel, 83, died Wednesday, January 15, 2020. She was in good health until she unexpectedly passed of an intracerebral hemorrhage. She was born in Belzoni on October 11, 1936, to Herman and Eunice Scarborough. At Belzoni High School, her beauty shone as a majorette, head cheerleader, and homecoming queen. She married her high school sweetheart, a football player at Belzoni High School, Gilmer Abel. After Gilmer played football at Sunflower Jr. College, they moved to Starkville for him to attend Mississippi State University. They have been married sixty-five years. After many moves, raising five girls, and helping with the grandchildren, they retired to Jasper Texas at a place they loved called the Fish Camp.

Darlene volunteered with her church, working to help children in need and teaching Sunday School. She also volunteered in nursing homes weekly. She loved to travel, spend time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, and host people at the fish camp. All who know her know what a beautiful, gracious southern lady she was and she has left a strong legacy with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

Darlene lived life fully and left this earth surrounded by her family as they prayed and sang over her. Her brother, Bobby Scarborough from Hollandale MS, and her parents Herman and Euncie Scarborough have preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband, Gilmer, her daughters and son-in-laws, Denise and Isaac Joseph, Karen and Bob Kulbeth, Suzanna Abel, Kimberly and Kevin Vogel, and Kristie and Mark Stevens, her seventeen grandchildren, and her nine (soon to be 10) great grandchildren. The pallbearers are her grandsons, Michael Kulbeth, Luke Kulbeth, Jake Kulbeth, Ryan Joseph, Josh Joseph, Hunter Mouton, Robert Stevens, and Jonathan Stevens.

We will have a celebration of Darlene’s life January 20 at Mortimer Funeral Home, 212 N Hayden St, Belzoni, MS 39038. Visitation is from 9-11, with a service and gravesite burial at 11. Immediately following there will be light refreshments as the family continues to visit with you.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to French Camp Academy.
