Sandra Abbott passed away Wednesday, May 17, 2023, at her daughter's home in Eufaula.

A graveside inurnment will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 24, 2023 at Oak Hill Cemetery. Pastor Hagan Jackson will be officiating the service. Cremation arrangements are entrusted to Bishop Funeral Service and Crematory.

Sandra was born July 12, 1943 in Hillsboro, Oregon to Howard Whorton Smith and Leona Coila (Gray) Smith. The family moved to Clarinda, Iowa for several years and on to Maryville, Missouri where they owned and operated a family restaurant. She graduated from Maryville High School in 1960, then went to beauty school and received her license in cosmetology. She worked as a beautician for several years.

Sandra married Jon Abbott on November 30, 1963, in Clarinda, Iowa. The couple moved to McAlester in 1973 where Jon was a managing partner in Brown Shoe Fit.

Sandy could often be found downtown, especially at lunch time. She loved being a wife, mother, and homemaker.

Sandy was affectionately known as "Nan" to her grandchildren and closest friends. She was strong in her faith and was a servant to her church, First United Methodist of McAlester. She was a long-time member of the TNT Sunday School Class, a student of the bible, and a prayer warrior. She prayed without ceasing and was always willing to share her faith. She believed, "Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God." (Romans 10:17). She served as secretary at the United Methodist District office for 9 years.

Sandy's grandchildren were her true source of pride and joy. She cherished spending time with them, loved to travel, and was always up for an adventure. She enjoyed being outside in her yard, especially mowing and starting a burn pile (occasionally to the dismay of the McAlester Fire Department). Nan loved watching Thunder basketball and was an avid reader. She became a dog lover late in life when she found "Rudy" wandering her neighborhood. He quickly became her faithful companion and watched over her until the end.

Sandra is survived by her daughters: Jill Parham and husband, Roger of Eufaula, and Jackie Waldron and husband, Joe of Oklahoma City; grandchildren: Michael Parham and wife, Elizabeth, Matthew Parham, Perrye Todd and husband, Garrett, and Spencer Waldron; great-grandchild: James Evan Todd; brother: Lee Smith and wife, Nancy of Hilton Head, South Carolina; numerous nieces, nephews, family, and friends; and her beloved Rudy.

She is preceded in death by her husband: Jon Abbott; parents: Howard and Leona Smith; sisters: Anna Lou Burham, Wylene Henderson, and Margaret DuBois; and granddaughter: Evan Paige Waldron.

Donations can be made to the First United Methodist Church of McAlester. A special thanks to Southeast Hospice and all those who helped care for our mom at the end of her life.
