He was born in Weston, on June 10, 1928, son of the late Perry Ables and Mary O. (Riddle) Ables.
Mr. Ables is also survived by his ex-wife: Ruby Pumphrey; three daughters, Debbie Whitt, Donna Saville and husband, Will and Delores Grogg and husband, Sam; 8 grandchildren, Gwendolyn Blake, Jessica Sandy, Heather Matheny, Samantha Miller, Caitlann Grogg, Brandi Saville, Breanna Grogg and Harley Grogg and 11 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews and a special caregiver, Kelley Montgomery.
In addition to his parents, Elmer was preceded in death by one son, Robert Ross Ables; three brothers, John, Samuel and Ola Ables and five sisters, Opal Childers, Dulcie Mason, Alma Turner, Dolly Ables and Myrtle Ables.
Mr. Ables worked as a logger and later was a glassworker with WV Glass Specialty Company. He then worked at small engine repair. He last became a security guard at the Weston State Hospital after it closed. His hobbies included fishing, hunting and playing horseshoes where he won several trophies. He also enjoyed eating at Hardee's and talking to all his friends. His time serving with the West Virginia National Guard of Lewis County meant a lot to him and he received an honorable discharge.
Family and friends will be received at the Hardman Family Funeral Home, 730 N. Main Avenue, Weston, on Friday, January 31, 2020 from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Friday at 2:00 p.m. from the Hardman Family Funeral Home chapel with Reverend Corey Matheny officiating. Interment will follow services in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens of Jane Lew, WV. Full military will be rendered by the United States Army and the Lewis County Honor Guard.
