Actor, Novelist, Businessman. Born in Atlanta to Samuel Earl Blackwell and Carrie Lagomarsino, Earl became fascinated with celebrities after caddying for the famous golfer, Bobby Jones. Earl graduated from Oglethorpe University with a degree in journalism then moved to Hollywood, California in 1932, to become an actor. After a short time there, he moved to New York City where in 1937 he wrote a musical comedy, "Aries is Rising," which starred Constance Collier. In 1939, Earl founded Celebrity Service, Inc. from which The Celebrity Bulletin started in 1952. Celebrity Service was a publicity agency. That company was responsible for "Happy Birthday, Mr. President" sung by Marilyn Monroe. In 1963, Earl co-edited Celebrity Register: An Irreverent Compendium of American Quotable Notables with Cleveland Amory. He also co-wrote two novels with his long-term companion, Eugenia Sheppard, "Crystal Clear" in 1978, and "Skyrocket" in 1980. Earl died in Manhattan in 1995.
