Joseph Gavit, (1876-1959) retired from the New York State Library in 1946, after a 50-year career during which he rose from junior clerk to associate librarian. During and after his service he was widely respected as an authority on the library's history and collections and as a bibliographer, historian, and genealogist.

He married Greenwich, NY, native Katharine Hulst in 1903. Katharine was a leader in the New York State Suffrage Movement and Joseph shared her commitment to that cause. The couple had two children, Henry Hulst Gavit and Frances Gavit Cornell.
