Raleigh did not finish high school but was well read, with good skills in mathematics, English, grammar and spelling.
Raleigh was stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas during World War 1. The war ended before he was sent overseas. (Per Nephew Marvin Barnhart, 2010.)
In 1920, Raleigh, age 22, was living in Greensburg, Kansas with his parents and was a truck driver for an oil company. (1920 Census)
Raleigh Puyear married Ophelya Wheeler in Dodge City, Kansas on October 28, 1921.
Raleigh and Ophelya moved to Johnson, Kansas. During that period, a local farmer was tired of trying to farm during the terrible times of the dust bowl. In fact, the dry, loose, blowing dirt accumulated into drifts and small hills, making farming to appear to be almost impossible. The farmer wanted out of the area and offered his half section of land to Raleigh for Raleigh's pick-up truck. (It must have been a good truck!) Raleigh accepted the offer and eventually became a very successful farmer, mostly growing wheat. (Information per Raleigh and Ophelya's nephew, Don Mace of Cheney, Kansas, son of Willis Mace and Martha Jane Wheeler) Raleigh and Ophelya's old farm house, small storage building located on the east side of the house, and bunk house located about 75-100 feet east of the storage building, were still standing on October 23rd of 2010 and are all located about 2 miles east of Johnson City, along the north side, and within 125 feet of Hwy. 160 (also shown as Hwy. 144), the only highway heading east out of Johnson City. (Information per Raleigh and Ophelya's nephew, Marvin Barnhart, son of Earl Barnhart and Marion Wheeler. Confirmed by Raleigh and Ophelya's niece, Vada L. Miller Barnes, daughter of Orlo Miller and Neva Wheeler.) Orlo, Neva and Vada Miller had lived in the old bunk house in 1933 when Orlo was working as a farm hand. Raleigh and Ophelya next moved to Johnson, Kansas, living at 307 N. Main Street.
They had 3 children;
1. Lois Arlene Puyear was born March 26, 1926 in Greensburg, Kansas. She married when she was young to Luther V. Hopkins. She was a school teacher, possibly in Satanta, Kansas. She was very creative, being also a writer, artist and seamstress. She next married Donald Clifford Davis and for a third time to John Evart McKirahan. Lois last used the last name of her 2nd husband, going by Lois A. Davis. She died in Santa Cruz, California on March 4, 2007.
2. Loren Puyear, married Margie Barnes
3. Linda Lou Puyear
