Marie was born May 6, 1928 in St. Joseph, Missouri, to Roy and Ada (Swearingen) Kirkpatrick. The family lived in Elk City, Kansas, where Marie attended the Elk City schools until the age of 15. The family moved to Independence, Kansas, where Marie finished out her studies. Marie married Lawrence Eugene Estes Jr. on May 3, 1947 in Fredonia, Kansas. The couple made their home in Independence, Kansas, and Marie enjoyed being a homemaker and raising their three sons—Larry, Mike and Tracy.
Marie enjoyed bowling, sewing, dancing, baking and crafts. She served as a member of Mercy Hospital Auxiliary and the First United Methodist Church. Many will remember Marie as a good cook and a superb “sweets” chef, especially cinnamon rolls, pies and an impressive array of Christmas candies.
Marie was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers—Jack, Marvin, Ted and Henry Bennett, three sisters—Inez Leyda, Maxine Lewis, and Jeanice Weber, and three husbands—Lawrence Eugene Estes Jr., Paul Whitson, and Lowell Case. Those left to cherish her memory include three sons and their wives—Larry and Jayne Estes, Mike and Nancy Estes, Tracy and Kitty Estes, all of Independence, Kansas, seven grandchildren—Shawna, Melissa, Skyler, Noah, Roxanne, Keith and Brandon, thirteen great-grandchildren—Colin, Zain, Blythe, Oce, Tucker, Finn, Emma, Chloe, Michael, Ethan, Gage, Chance and Benjamin.
