George Wilbur Brenton of Eureka died on June 1, 2004, at Greenwood County Hospital in Eureka, Kansas at the age of 76.
He was born on October 17, 1927, in Lapland, Kansas the son of Albert E. Brenton and Lena M. (Miller) Brenton. He was raised in Lapland and attended Lapland and Eureka schools. After schooling, he worked as a ranch hand and with the Eureka police department before joining the Army and serving his country during the Korean Conflict with dignity and honor.
On March 7, 1952, he was united in marriage to Rosalie Storey in El Dorado, Kansas. They moved to Eureka where George worked in the Eureka police department. In 1953, they moved to Neal and worked for Missouri Pacific Railroad. In 1954 they moved back to Eureka and went to work for Mahar and Braden Construction Company. In 1955, they moved to El Dorado and George went to work for Flint Rig Construction Company and later for El Dorado Skelgas-Skelly-Getty Oil Company for the next 22 years retiring in 1983 when he began farming outside of El Dorado. They returned to Eureka in 1994.
He is survived by his wife Rosalie of Eureka; sons Michael and Marty Brenton both of Rosalia, Kansas; two daughters, Marietta K. Abplanalp of Potwin, Kansas, Melodee F. Patterson of Tulsa, Oklahoma; eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; one brother John P. Brenton of Topeka, and three sisters Donelda M. Brown of El Dorado, Lela Eaton of Bakersfield, California and Mary Ellen Scott of Phoenix, Arizona. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, and three sisters.
Funeral services with be held at 2:00 P.M., Friday, June 4, 2004, at Koup Family Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 9:00 A.M. until service time the day of the funeral with Reverend Brad Seymour officiating. Interment will follow in the Greenwood Cemetery.
A memorial has been established in his name to the Greenwood County Hospital. Contributions may be sent in care of Koup Family Funeral Home at P.O. Box 595, Eureka, Kansas 67045.
