Voigt Wagoner (V.W.) Cobb, Jr., died February 9, 2020, at the age of 87 after several years of declining health.
V. W. was born on July 26, 1932, in Guilford County to Voigt Wagoner Cobb, Sr., and Mozelle Gerringer Cobb. A lifelong resident of Guilford County, he was active in his community and state, serving in the 30th (Old Hickory) Division of the North Carolina National Guard. He was a long-time member of the McLeansville Volunteer Fire Department. He recalled that when a house close to his caught fire and only two showed up to fight the blaze, he thought he could help, and from that time he worked within the Department helping to acquire equipment, teaching firefighting classes, and serving as Chief.
In 1988 he retired from Southern Bell Advanced Systems after 31 years of service. At that time, he pledged to “hunt and trap for five months, then do exactly what my wife tells me to do the other seven months of the year.” And he did. He was an avid outdoorsman and founding member of the McLeansville Wildlife Club. He served as the Central Vice President for the North Carolina Wildlife Federation as well as President, and he was named Sportsman of the Year in 1989. His interests in game and fish programs, habitat, and youth hunter education spanned the state.
V. W. was preceded in death by his wife of 43 years, Nancy Katherine Gilliam Cobb.
He is survived by his daughters Karen Carroll Cave (Dan) and Amy Cobb Lowe (Terry) and sons Voigt Wagoner Cobb, III, and David Thomas Cobb (Linda), as well as six grandchildren: Nathan Carroll (Erika), Meredith Carroll (Andi), Jade Cobb Murray (David), Jeremy Cobb (Heather), Thomas Cobb (Christina), and Justin Patterson (Mandy). He also leaves eleven great grandchildren, Lucas, Kayleigh, Tyler, Ava, Keegan, Elle, Brice, Avery, Reagan, Eleanor, and Oliver. Many friends and other family members, including his sister, Vera Ann Ingle of Whitsett, will miss him greatly.
