Son of Bernard Bergin and Margaret Masterson.

James E Bergin married Margaret Gilchrist in Columbus, Ohio on 10 Oct 1872.
James and Margaret had three children: Mary L Bergin, Matilda "May/Tillie/Tilly" Bergin (wife of John Purvis), and Francis "Frank" J Bergin.

James E Bergin began a successful printing and newspaper career in Columbus and later relocated with his wife and children to Washington D. C. to continue his career in government printing.

Per newspaper articles, James E Bergin was in a hospital in New York for an illness and soon after readmitted to Bellevue Hospital, where he died of pneumonia. His family in Washington D. C. was informed of his death, to which a telegram was sent to his brother, Bernard Bergin, in Columbus, Ohio. The body of James E Bergin was returned to his hometown in Columbus for a funeral and burial.

James E Bergin was soon to celebrate his 50th birthday later the same year of his death.

Newpapers archives indicate James E Bergin is survived by his wife, three children, two brothers, Bernard and Frank Bergin, and his aging mother, Mrs. Margaret Bergin of 446 E Naghten Street. Additionally noted is his late father, Bernard Bergin, one of the pioneers of Columbus.

A large funeral mass took place at St. Patrick's Church with interment following at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
