Billy passed away Thursday, June 29, 2017, at Faith Regional Health Services in Norfolk, NE.

Billy Don Lyons was born in Kansas City, MO, on September 21, 1934, to Don and Alta (Skaggs) Lyons. He moved to O’Neill, NE, as a boy with his parents and 2 brothers, Walt and Leroy, and 2 sisters, Betty and Alta Mae, when his father opened a bluegrass seed yard in O’Neill. He stayed in the O’Neill area until he joined the Army on November 10, 1954. He served 2 years and returned to O’Neill after his honorable discharge in October of 1956.

In the spring of 1957, Bill met the love of his life, Laura (Lolly) Oetter, when he offered to give Lolly and her friend, Helen, a ride home from a dance at the Legion Hall in O’Neill. When Bill tried to get too friendly, Lolly firmly put him back in line. He informed her that night that he intended to marry her. One year later, on August 13, 1958, he did, and Lolly has occasionally continued to put him back in line. Together they had 5 children: Mark, Michael, Marty, Cora, and BJ (Billy Jon).

Bill worked on or managed feedlots or cattle ranches from Shaeffer’s by O’Neill to Hanson’s near Mack’s Creek Missouri. He always tended to his cows and his children, teaching the boys to “Tip your hat when we drive by the bull pasture, show some respect because they have bigger balls than you will ever have.” Bill and Lolly eventually moved to Page, where they have stayed for the last 30-odd years.

Bill is survived by his wife of 58 years, Lolly, 3 sons: Mark Lyons and significant other, Phyl, of Lincoln, NE, Marty Lyons and wife Rachele, of Herrick, SD, BJ Lyons and wife April, of Page, NE, one daughter, Cora Calkins and husband Walt, of Page, NE, one brother, Leroy Lyons and wife Donna of Long Pine, NE, 7 grandchildren: Candace and husband Richard, Raymond, Cassandra and husband Cody, Martyn, Alyxandria, Michael, Billy Zayne, and four great-grandchildren, and many other relatives and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, one son Michael, one brother, Walt and 2 sisters, Betty and Alta Mae.
