Fred was born in New Brunswick, Canada, but moved to Boston as a youngster. He met and married a bookkeeper, Nellie Cabot of Cambridge and they moved to the Dakota Territories to operate an Indian Trading Post. He owned mercantile stores (groceries and sundries) in partnership with his brothers in Fargo and Minneapolis / Saint Paul, and made some daring investments including bankrolling his son Cabot's cigar stores in Nome, Alaska, real estate investment in Cuba after the Spanish-American War and buying orange groves in California. It is likely that the citrus freeze of 1913 was his undoing. He moved to Northern California "for his health," then died shortly after in Oakland at age 51. The official cause of death was cirrhosis of the liver. He was survived by his wife, Nellie, two sons, Cabot and Harry, and a granddaughter, Jeanetta.
