Obituary published in the Conway Springs Star, Northfield Kansas, Thursday, May 7, 1914

John Duncan, an old and highly respected citizen who has lived on his farm four miles east and one mile north of Conway Springs, for many years died last Friday morning, after an extended illness, incident to old age.

Funeral services were conducted from the home Saturday by Rev. A. A. Hedges, pastor of the Christian church, and a large number of relatives, friends and neighbors attended. The body was laid to rest in the Conway Springs cemetery.

John Duncan was born January 9, 1827, in Sommerset county, Pennsylvania; died May 1, 1914, at the age of 87 years, 3 months and 22 days. He was married to Sarah E. Griffith February 26, 1857, at Olney, Illinois. To this union thirteen children were born, eight of whom survive him. They moved from Illinois to Lawrence County, Mo., where they lived for several years, at which place he united with the Christian church and has always lived an upright Christian life. From Missouri they moved to Kansas and located on a farm in Sumner county, which has been his home for the past thirty years. His wife died August 12, 1910, and since her death he has been tenderly cared for by his three sons, John, Alvin and Samuel.

Mr. Duncan was of a retiring disposition, gentle in manner, kind of a heart and always cheerful and patient. His home life was all that would make an ideal husband and father.

The children left to mourn were all at his bedside at the time of his death. They are: Mrs. Catherine Deisher, Eddy, Okla; Chas. Duncan, Hooker, Okla; Thomas Duncan, Anson, Kansas; Mrs. Bertha Prillman, Millerton, Kansas; John R. Duncan, Samuel Duncan, Alvin Duncan and Mrs. Susan Brown of Conway Springs.
