We have three different birth records for Maria. Her just found Russian birth record says she was born Anna Maria Niess on August 24, 1843 in Kassel, Russia; her North Dakota Death Certificate says August 24, 1841; and Emil Benz, Maria's grandson, recorded her birth date as July 15, 1841. Records of her children, born in Russia, list her first name as Maria. So do most of the census records in the United States.

Maria was married three times. Her first husband was August Wilhelm Wall who was born on October 13, 1842 in Hoffnungstal, Cherson, South Russia. We do not know when or where they were married. Records have been found of the birth of three of their children in Hoffnungstal, Cherson, South Russia: Rosina (born on 16 May 1868), Elizabeth (born on January 18, 1870), and August W. (born on December 15, 1871). Her husband August died on February 3, 1872 in Hoffnungstal.

Her second marriage was to George Michael Bentz in about 1872. George's marriage to Maria appears to be his third marriage, and he entered the marriage with at least five children from his first two wives. Maria and George appear to have had five children of their own from this marriage: Margaretha Bentz (born January 29, 1874 in Kassel, Russia), Katharina Bentz (born March 23, 1876 in Russia), Frederick Bentz (born January 9, 1880 in Russia), Jacob Bentz (born October 3, 1882 in Kassel, Russia), and Anna Bentz (born in about 1885 in South Dakota). In about 1885, George and Maria immigrated to the United States. They immigrated to the Hutchinson County, SD area. Sometime between 1885 and 1890, George Michael Bentz died.

In the 1900 Census, taken in George & Elizabeth (Wall) Reiswig's house, it was recorded that Maria had ten children, and that nine of the children were still living. We know that the child who died was George Reiswig's first wife, Elizabeth Bentz. Two of Maria's children appear in the 1897 photograph to the left: Margaret (Bentz) Suelzle (back row, 3rd from the left) wife of Gottlieb Suelzle, and August Wall (back row, far right), husband of Katherine (Suelzle) Wall.

In about 1897, Maria married Johannes Suelzle. The 1897 Suelzle family photograph was taken after they were married. By 1900, Maria and Johannes separated. Maria lived with her children after she separated from Johannes.
