America was born in 1870 near Troublesome Creek in Breathitt County, Kentucky. Troublesome is near the unincorporated community of Lost Creek in Breathitt County which is about 75 miles East of Louisville in the Daniel Boone National Forest.

Her parents were John Butler "Butter" Hays (1832-1906) and Sarah Miller (1832-1880) whom were pioneer settlers in Breathitt County dating back to the 1830s. The family is found in the US Census' of 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880. John Hays' parents were John B Hayes (1799-1839) and Ursula Haddix (1801-1872) whom also settled in the Troublesome Creek area of Breathitt County. Sarah Miller's parents were Benjamin Miller (1796-1859) and Nancy Holcomb (1807-1859 whom settled near Lost Creek in Breathitt County and are buried in the Strong Family Cemetery.

America's siblings included Nancy, William, Ursula, Gabriel, Prudy, John, Sally, and Mariam.

America married Lewis W Combs. Their children included, Rosey, Manda, Jessie, Bertha, Charlie, Martha, John and Dovie. The attached photo came from a listing on the Comb family tree at the website familysearch.org. America is 2nd from right and her husband Lewis is 3rd from left. The photo looks as if it was taken about 1903.

America died in Newton County, Arkansas on June 3, 1933.
