Daughter of Capt. Charles Franklin Cunningham and Eliza Frances Shute, born in the town of Stockton, now called Stockton Springs. Her parents remained together until Charles' death. He was ships captain of the barque named "Civilian" which was wrecked on January 6, 1866 in the Caribbean, off the coast of Jeremie, Haiti. It was widely reported in the New York and New England shipping reports that Capt. Cunningham died January 14, 1866 of "fever due to exposure" from the shipwreck. It is unknown if his body was returned to Maine, interred in Haiti, or buried at sea.

Alice's mother was remarried in 1874 to a civil war veteran named Cyrus Hartshorn. Together they had two sons, Frank A. and Fred L., giving Alice and her older sister, Lilia, two half-brothers.

Alice married Frank N. Belcher on February 22, 1888 in Searsport, Maine. After the birth of their first son, Everett, they relocated to Winthrop, Massachusetts where they had two more children, Harold and Frances. Alice and Frank remained together until her death.

Alice is interred with her husband, Frank; their daughter, Frances A. (Belcher) Fredericks; and Frank's 2nd wife, Barbara A. (Campbell) Belcher.
