American actress and producer. She was the youngest of three daughters born to Stella Germaine Murray and John Ivan Jackson (originally Jaksekovich/Jchekovitch), a Croatian immigrant. Her family moved to Brooklyn when she was seven and she graduated from Franklin K. Lane High School in 1943. She studied drama at what was then the New School for Social Research. She met Eli Wallach in 1946, when they were both cast in Tennessee Williams's "This Property Is Condemned." They joined Le Gallienne's American Repertory Theater on Broadway, appearing in "Henry VIII," "Androcles and the Lion" and "What Every Woman Knows," were married on March 5, 1948 and had three children. She was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play in 1956 for her performance in "Paddy Chayefsky's Middle of the Night." She won an Obie Award for Best Actress in 1963 for her performance in two Off-Broadway plays, "The Typists" and "The Tiger." In 1978, they appeared together in an Off-Broadway revival of "The Diary of Anne Frank," alongside their two daughters: Roberta Wallach played Anne, and Katherine Wallach played Anne's sister, Margot. On television, she appeared on "Gunsmoke," "The Defenders" and, later in her career, "Law & Order" and "ER." Her movie appearances included "The Shining" (1980) and "Funny About Love" (1990). She was predeceased by her older sister, Catherine. Surviving are her daughters and son, Peter; sister, Beatrice Marz; three grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
