Obituary
MYRNA RHODA (CUNNINGHAM) SMITH
November 23, 1929 – February 14, 2020
Myrna Rhoda (Cunningham) Smith, age 90, was born on November 23, 1929 in Miami, Florida, the youngest daughter of Lindsey Elmore and Leona Ellen (Bishop) Cunningham. Her birth was quite difficult on her mother, so she and her sister went to live with her maternal grandmother for the first two years of her life. She then returned to Miami, where she spent her youth. At the young age of only 13 she and her sister left home and traveled to Washington D.C. where she acquired a job at a department store selling women’s gloves; a year later she started working at the Pentagon. In 1943 no one asked a lot of questions about age or backgrounds (after all, it was wartime). While in Washington D.C., she met Walter Louis Smith on the street looking for directions to the local bowling alley. Walter was there completing his naval submarine training. Six weeks later, on February 1, 1946, Myrna and Walter were married and remained happily married for 67 years, until Walter died on July 17, 2013.
After their marriage, they returned to Bellevue, Washington, where Walter’s family lived on the family farm. Walter was still stationed at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii and after his military leave ended, he and Myrna sailed back to Hawaii. Myrna returned to Bellevue before giving birth to their first child, Kenneth. They welcomed another son, Larry a few years later and completed their family with their daughter, Janet. The family continued to farm and run a greenhouse operation in the heart of Bellevue until 1974, when they moved their wholesale greenhouse operation to Issaquah, which later became Squak Mountain Nursery. After retiring for a few years, they spent time building and remodeling homes and then again returned to the flower business. In 1989 they bought and operated Bellevue Nursery before retiring once again. Myrna spent her life surrounded by flowers and family, both of which she loved so much. Over the years Myrna enjoyed extensive travel, both internationally and domestically, visiting all 50 states throughout the years.
Myrna is survived by her three children, Kenneth Smith (Lori), Larry Smith (An), and Janet Bean (Mike); eight grandchildren, Scott Smith, Christopher Bean (Anne), Brandon Smith (Dwai), Kevin Bean (Raelyn), Shaundy Muchin (Greg), Larissa Swank (Dan), Brian Smith (Kerry), and Kara Smith; and 10 great-grandchildren, Karman Bean, Elaine Bean, Madisyn Smith, Zoe Smith, Tyler Bean, Truman Smith, Makylie Bean, Hailey Muchin, Callie Smith, and Liam Smith. Also surviving are many nephews and nieces.
Myrna was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; a sister, Leona; brother-in-laws, Jack Cotter and Deane Smith and sister-in-law, Charlotte Smith; a nephew, Richard Smith and a niece, Kerry Benson.
Myrna leaves a legacy of honesty and her love of family; she will be deeply missed by all who knew her. She lived a long and happy life and is now reunited with her best friend and loving husband, Walt.
Funeral services for Myrna will be held on Tuesday, February 25, 2020. Graveside services for immediate family will be held at 12:30 p.m., followed at 1:00 p.m. with a memorial service in the Chapel at Sunset Hills Memorial Park, 1215 – 145th Pl. SE, Bellevue, WA 98007.
