William Henry McMahon, IV, 58 years old, of Framingham, MA passed away in his home on April 13, 2017. A Framingham resident since 1985, Bill was born in Norwalk, CT to the late William H. McMahon, III and Eleanor Devine McMahon. He graduated from Fairfield College Preparatory School and the College of the Holy Cross.
Bill’s life was filled with generosity toward family, friends and community. Bill lived with juvenile diabetes since 1966 and remained living independently after losing his sight from the ravages of the disease in 1984. He graduated from The Carroll Center for the Blind in Newton, MA in 1984 and began a career working for Health Plan Services in Framingham, MA which spanned more than 20 years. In 1996, he received a life-saving kidney transplant from his brother, Kevin. Upon his retirement, Bill devoted more of his time to his favorite causes: The Carroll Center for the Blind, of which he was Vice Chairman of the Board; the United States Blind Golf Association (USBGA), of which he was a 30-year Board Member; and the Framingham Lions Club, of which he was a Past President and Board Member. His charitable and volunteer works also included co-founding Golf-For-All, a not-for-profit organization that provides free golf instruction to adults and children with disabilities in the greater Boston area. Bill was a long time member of the Shorehaven Golf Club in East Norwalk, CT and the Catholic Club of Norwalk,CT.
Bill’s professional accomplishments and charitable works have been recognized by The Massachusetts Commission for the Blind as Blind Employee of the Year; the Northeastern Association for the Blind with the Vista Award; and the Lions Club International with the Melvin Jones Award.
Bill’s family wants to thank all of his friends and supporters for making his wish of independent living a reality. He never could have lived independently over the past 32 years without the calls, visits, rides and support of so many friends and volunteers. Bill enjoyed life to the fullest and traveled throughout the world competing in USBGA events. Nationally ranked as one of the top five blind golfers by the USBGA, his golf travels introduced him to many people such as Prince Andrew of Great Britain and the late Bob Hope, and created friendships with the likes of Eli Manning, Larry Bird, K.C. Jones, Kevin McHale and late Ken Venturi.
Bill is survived by his three brothers, Dr. Eugene J. McMahon and his wife Victoria of Newtown, PA, Paul B. McMahon and his wife Michelle of Acton, MA, and Kevin D. McMahon and his wife Mary Ellen of Southport, CT. He was the proud uncle of Gloria, Grace, Mercedes, Wills, Rosemary, William II, Liam and Jonathan McMahon.
