Delmar A. "Del" Schendel, 85, of Lake Placid, FL, died Monday, August 4, 2003 in Ft. Myers Beach, FL from complications after surgery for an abdominal aortic aneurysm. He served in the U.S Army during WWII as a non-commissioned radiology instructor at Fitzsimmons Hospital in Denver, CO. Subsequently, Mr. Schendel began his 36 year career in the wholesale food industry, working his way through the ranks. Having started working in his father's grocery stores in Sherburn and Mountain Lake, MN as a boy, he became a traveling salesman for Jewel Tea Co. and later was the manager for Western Grocer and Consolidated Foods in Albert Lea, MN. He transferred to Edina, MN as an Executive Vice President with the May Company/Piggly Wiggly Stores.
Always among the longest off the tee, Mr. Schendel enjoyed an avid, lifelong love-hate relationship with golf. As a member of Green Lea Golf Course in Albert Lea, he was most proud of his two holes-in-one. He continued golfing through his retirement and took part in many golf leagues. Bowling and playing cards were his pastimes when not on the golf course.
Mr. Schendel was a longtime member of the Lutheran Church and Elks. serving in many capacities.
A devoted family man, Mr. Schendel is survived by his two children, Janine (Dr. Steven) Aaker, Elko, MN and Dr. Joel (Gay) Schendel, Midiothian, VA; grand children , Joshua, Zachary and Rachel; grand niece and nephew, Christopher and Sarah Cunningham; his brother, Roger (Jan) Schendel, Eden Prairie, MN and dear friend and golfing partner, sister-in-law Evelyn Schendel, Ft. Myers Beach, FL; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father; wife, Evelyn "Kaye" Schendel; wife Dorothy Brayman Schendel; brothers, Martin (Prior Lake, MN) and Donald (El Paso, TX); and a nephew, Martin Jr.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 23, 2003 at Washburn McReavy Chapel, W. 50th St. & Vernon Ave at Hwy 100 in Edina, MN with visitation one hour before the service. A private interment will be held at Lakeside Cemetery in Fairmont, MN. Memorials may be sent to the family and will be dispersed amongst various charities.
