While Elmer's family was homesteading in (NE4-Sec30-TP115-R75) Fairview Township, Sully County, Dakota Territory (presently South Dakota) he met Josephine "Josie" Gravell whose family's land was adjacent. Elmer and Josie married about 1886 (according to the 1903 divorce notification in the newspaper).

By the 1895 Iowa Census, they were living in Linn County, Iowa. Members of the Karr family resided in Iowa.

He died 10 miles north of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Buried in Palo Cemetery per Death Certificate.

Josephine and Elmer had 6 children: 3 died in infancy, Elgia Ellsworth (1896-1943), Inger Nora (1898-1926), and Dora Ota (1900-1928).
