Living in Williamstown, until the fall of 1858, and moving to Kansas, where he enlisted in Co. G, 7th Kansas, Volunteer Infantry and served three years, He was discharged and then re-enlisted in 1863, and severed another two years. He attained the ranks of 1st Sergeant and later 2nd Lieutenant, returning home Jan 27, 1869. He was married to Miss Elizabeth Speaks, the daughter of Daniel Speaks of Linn county. Five children were born; Bert of Pleasanton, Charley of Kansas City, Harry of Tagbalaran Island of Bohol, Philippine Island, Maud and Gertie, at home.

Was elected the first sheriff of Cherokee county, afterwards he moved to Linn county, in 1870.
