Laura Virginia Smith Scharffs, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend died on Friday, April 14, 2000 at the LDS hospital after a sudden setback in her recovery from Open Heart Surgery Six Weeks Ago.
She died peacefully, encircled in the arms of the love of her family.
Virginia was born on March 2, 1936 in Salt Lake City, the ninth of thirteen children of Dr. Calvin Schwartz Smith and Mrs. Ethel Lucile Dimond Smith. Virginia was a Granddaughter of President Joseph Fielding and Mary Taylor Schwartz Smith, and a Great-Granddaughter of Hyrum and Mary Fielding Smith. Throughout her life, she was faithful to her family and to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Virginia graduated from Granite High School, received her bachelors degree from the University of Utah, and her masters degree in elementary education curriculum from Brigham Young University. In high school and college, she played the flute in the marching band. She worked as a librarian and a teacher in the Granite School District.
She married Dr. Gilbert Woodrow Scharffs in the Salt Lake Temple on June 29, 1959. Together they had four children.
She was involved in numerous church callings in her local wards and stakes, served in the PTA of the schools where her children attended, including PTA president, was recording secretary of Neff camp of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers, and spent countless hours doing family history and genealogy work in the Joseph F. Smith Family Association. Virginia loved to paint, quilt, garden, and read. For over 30 years she attended oil painting classes, and was working on her latest creation just last week. She also leaves behind a beautiful, intricate, unfinished patchwork quilt on her 12-foot quilting machine, one of dozens made for family, friends, and charity in recent years. Only a week ago, she purchased fabric to make a quilt for her eleventh grandchild, expected in two months. The bulbs she planted last fall are just now beginning to blossom. Virginia left three books lying on her bed, and a house full of book cases, sagging from being double stacked. Most of all she delighted in being with her precious grandchildren. She lived life fully, and well, until the very end, even with illness and setbacks.
Virginia was Survived by her Loving Husband Gilbert; daughter Yvette Scharffs Ungricht and son-in-law Albert Lon Ungricht of Salt Lake City, and their children Andrew, Mary, Emilie, and Amy; son Brett Gilbert Scharffs and daughter-in-law Deirdre Mason Crane Scharffs of Springville, and their children Elliot and Sophie; daughter Lisa Scharffs Kasteler and son-in-law Rodger David Kasteler of Antioch, California, and their children Lauren, Maegan, and Spencer; son Calvin Karl Scharffs and daughter-in-law Lisa-Cheri Branham Scharffs of Park City, and their daughter Emma; her sisters Margaret Smith Miller of Claremont, California; Helen Smith Rabe of Ogden, Nora Ruth Smith Grover of Scotsdale, Arizona; and Claudia Gay Smith Landro of Salt Lake City. She was preceded in death by her father, Calvin Smith and her mother Lucile Smith, her sisters Mary Dimond Smith, Lucile Smith Hutchings, Agnes Elizabeth Smith Wrathall, Kathleen Valois Smith, and Maureen Dimond Smith, and her brothers Calvin Schwartz Smith, Jr., Thomas Wayne Dimond Smith, and James Dimond Smith.
Funeral Services were held on Tuesday, April 18, 2000, at 12 Noon at the East Millcreek 11th Ward Chapel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints located at 2702 East Evergreen Avenue. Friends attended a Viewing on Monday Evening from 6 to 7 P.M. at the Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple, and at the Ward from 11 to 11:45 A.M. Prior To The Funeral Services.
Graveside Services followed at the Salt Lake City Cemetery where she was buried.
