Author, Maritime Explorer, Underwater Archaeologist. Known for his suspense novels, many featuring fictional undersea explorer, Dirk Pitt. A prolific writer, he began writing novels in 1965 and published in numerous genres including non-fiction and children's books. His 85th book is to be published in March 2020. His publisher says there are more to come. He sold more than a hundred million copies over his vast career, many making it to the New York Times Best Seller's list. His books have been published in more than 40 languages and in more than 100 countries. In 1979, he started a second career as an adventurer. Having learned to scuba dive while serving in the Air Force, he developed a love of exploring underwater wrecks. He led or joined expeditions that uncovered roughly 60 shipwrecks, becoming an internationally recognized shipwreck authority. His first non-fiction book, The Sea Hunters, was published in 1996 and chronicles his experiences looking for shipwrecks. He is the founder of the National Underwater and Marine Agency, (NUMA), a legitimate non-profit organization which was named after the fictional Federal agency from many of his novels. NUMA is dedicated to preserving American maritime history. He was also a collector of classic cars. The Cussler Museum in Arvada, Colorado houses his extensive collection of over 100 significant automobiles.
